Pilgrimage of May (Romerías de Mayo)

Since 1994 the Pilgrimage of the Cross has been retaken. The Pilgrimage celebration every May 2 to 8, is the excuse for many people of arts and tourists from Cuba and abroad to pay a visit to Holguín. This celebration is one of the best cultural events of the year, with active people’s participation.

After walking along Holguín main streets, a large crowd of pilgrims head towards the top of the old Cerro del Bayado (Hill of the Cross) and carry on their shoulders one of the city symbols: Holguín Hatchet. Closed to the old Numancia Watch-Tower, up there on the top, the Hatchet is going to be the queen of the celebration, which is an merging of tradition and modern times.

Try to say that you have visited Holguín without mentioning the Hill of the Cross and its enormous stairway...Your interlocutor will look at you with pity and will tell you that if you did not fill up your chest with fresh air up there, or your eyes were not relaxed with the view from that hill, for sure, you do not really know what Holguín is all about.
